School of Foreign Languages, SNU
The School of Foreign Languages (SFL), Shenyang Normal University , was founded in 1953 as the former Department of Foreign Languages. At present, it comprises English Department I (underclassman teaching), English Department II (upperclassman and postgraduate teaching), Russian Department, Japanese Department, and French & German Department. In addition, SFL has three research institutes (the Institute of English Teaching, the Institute of Japanese Culture and Multi-media Research and Development Center ), one administrative office, and one Experimental Teaching Center.
Providing five languages: English, Russian, Japanese, French and German, SFL offers 6 bachelor-degree programs: English Teacher Education, English, English Interpretation, Russian, Japanese and French. Among these programs, the enrollment of English majors is at the National Undergraduate Level (B) and English is the Model Specialty in Liaoning Province .
Currently the School has two master-degree programs, namely Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics and English Language & Literature. Furthermore, SFL has the qualification to confer English Educational Master Degree and equivalent education degree to those postgraduates who further their study on a part-time basis. The Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics has five sub-programs: English General Linguistics, English Applied Linguistics, English-Chinese Translation, Japanese-Chinese Translation and Russian Linguistics. English Language & Literature includes British Literature, American Literature and Literary Criticism.
The School has 102 faculty and staff members with conscientious scholarship, dedication and devotion and innovative capacity, including 9 professors and 27 associate professors. Moreover, SFL employs 11 foreign experts and teachers who come from America , Canada , Russia , Japan , and France . At present, SFL enjoys a pride in having an expert receiving State Depart Special Subsidy, a provincial Celebrated Teacher, a provincial Specialty Leading Person, two renowned teachers at the university level, a responsible professor, an academic leader, seventeen graduate supervisors at the university level and twelve graduate tutors at the school level. 1,770 full-time students are enrolled in the School: 1,553 undergraduates, 209 graduates and 8 Korean Students. In addition, 151 students pursue their Educational Master Degree and 351 are taking other programs in their spare time.
Over the past decades, the School has attached great importance to the principle of integrating teaching into research, program development into subject construction, and of advancing research with teaching while facilitating teaching with research. In the past two years, the teachers from different majors have hosted 3 Liaoning Provincial Social Science Funding Projects, 1 subject from Provincial Social Science Union, 18 Projects supported by Humanities & Social Sciences Research Fund of Liaoning Provincial Education Department , 1 national social science fund project and have undertaken 1 Provincial Education Reform project, twelve subjects concerning education reformation in our university. They have also published fourteen academic monographs , translated books and textbooks and 150 academic articles. Additionally, the School has one Course of Excellence and one Outstanding Course at provincial level; and four courses taught in SFL were named as University Key Course.
SFL provides its students and teachers with a comfortable modern teaching, learning and research environment, with twenty-one professor offices, nine language labs, a simultaneous interpretation room , a multimedia lab, a digitalized language lab, three multi-functional visual-lingual classrooms, an multimedia network classroom, an equipment-filled room for teachers to prepare their courses, and teaching and research equipments totaling 400,000,000 Yuan. There is an existing stock of 87 foreign and domestic periodical s, 21,207 books and 4,700 language tapes and video disks .
In recent years, the SFL students have participated in national and provincial professional competitions and achieved remarkable achievements. In the 9th English Debating Competition organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the SFL delegation won second place, and in the following 10 th , 11 th and 12 th “FLTRP Cup” English Debating Competitions, our delegations won the second prize twice, third prize once. In 2008 national Japanese Speaking Primary Competition ( Northeastern Region), the contestant from our school won the first prize. In annual Shenyang Japanese Speaking Competition, the SFL students win the second prize constantly. The graduates of the School are highly praised for their noble morality , solid academic foundation, broadened knowledge, rich expertise and professional devotion.
Placing stress on international academic exchanges and cooperation, the School of Foreign Languages keeps close and long-term academic relationships with fifteen universities in America, UK, Japan, Russia, and Lebanon and the their Consulates General in Shenyang. SFL regularly sends key teachers abroad to further their study, and the excellence students to study in the Japan , and Russia .
The School persists in providing service for the society, having test centers for TOEFL(IBT), IELTS, Japanese Language Plane Test (JLPT), PETS (levels1-5), CATTI(China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters), Cambridge Young Learners English Test, Trinity College London Spoken English Test, etc. Basing on Shenyang , the service of SFL encompasses the northeast region and spans the whole nation,
SFL was awarded a series of honors successively, such as Model School in Talents Cultivation, SNU Advanced School , SNU Advanced General Party Branch and SNU Excellent School in Teaching Management by Party Committee of SNU and SNU.
The School will continue to emancipate the mind, apply the Scientific Outlook on Development, set English teachers education as its main characteristic and English interpretation as its focus, reinforce Japanese teaching and systematically improve the teaching of Russian, French and German, adhere to the market oriented principle , base on schooling quality and characteristics, improve the core competency, build itself into a first-class teaching & researching school in Liaoning Province and to become influential in the country in 2010.
